Kite Feast in Visaginas

Aitvarų šventė On the 1st of June, 2006, students and teachers of Žiburys middle school of Visaginas and the Center of Special Education and Socialization Vilties šaltinis (participants of project Kite) organized a Kite Feast and dedicated it to the International Children’s Day. The campaign Make the dreams come true was taking place during the feast as well.

The aim of the campaign was to introduce the Childhood Cancer Fund Rugutė to the citizens of Visaginas and to encourage them to make sick children’s dreams come true. The preparation for the event took one month. Elena Dedeiko and Ina Negoda, reporters of the weekly newspaper Sugardas, helped us by preparing articles about the activity of Fund Rugutė, and by encouraging the citizens to support the initiative of the young volunteers.

The little participants of the project Kite made more than 300 flyers/mini-kites, where brief information about the fund and invitation to make sick children’s dreams come true was printed. On the 1st of June those flyers were handed to the citizens. It has become a tradition that the students of Žiburys middle school and disabled children from SUSC Vilties šaltinis make the kites together. This year they made a kite for each of Rugutė’s children.

The organizers of the event were happy to have a lot of helpers and assistants: children from the kindergarten Ąžuoliukas (groups Nykštukai and Žirniukai) were brought to the feast by bus. They delivered a gift to one of Rugutė’s children – the kite they had decorated on their own. Kites and wishes for sick children were delivered from the Secondary school of Dukštas (district of Ignalina) as well.

It’s a pleasure to know that the feast was attended by both citizens and heads of the municipal government. Hand-made kites, warm words and wishes, collected from the participants and guests of the event, will be given to Edita Abrukauskienė, the director of the Fund Rugutė.

We sincerely thank Mrs. Vilma Balčiūnienė for her idea of goodness and for the promotion of Rugutė. We thank all the children who put the warmth of their hearts into the mini-kites, and we also thank the adults who contributed to the organization of the event.
